I thought the time for "wearing" Preston had long passed, but learned differently from an old friend who I saw toting her 3-year-old around in a carrier. It's a very Ithaca thing to do, (as is attachment parenting in general), but I tend to agree with a lot of that particular philosophy of child-rearing. Preston still has very high needs for physical contact, especially with me, and quite honestly carrying around a 32 pound child wears you down pretty quick. Not to mention that you have to do everything one-handed. Which, I should mention is a skill I have become highly adept in. Unfortunately, most chores generally require the use of both hands, atleast to be time-efficient and somewhat productive (i.e. folding the laundry, preparing dinner, etc.) So, after some coaching and extensive research, I invested in a new baby carrier, one meant to hold up to 50lbs. We gave it a go for the first time at the grocery store today. I wouldn't call it a total fail, but we only made it about 1/4 of the way through the store before Preston started squirming and whining, at varying decibel levels. This evening, as if on que, Preston started tugging at my legs just as I was trying to pull the preparations for dinner out of the cupboard. He was not very happy when he saw me putting the carrier back on, but I told him,"it's this, or nothing, buddy." And he seemed to understand. We ended up having quite the enjoyable experience, preparing dinner together. Not to mention I was able to make a meal which took more than 2 steps.
