Egg hunting

This past Saturday, Preston participated in his first community-wide Easter egg hunt. It was all fun
and games until the start whistle blew, at which point Mama Sara learned that group egg-hunting is
apparently quite cut-throat. Preston was doing his usual dilly-dallying, and I, having hung up my
competitive shoes a long time ago, was pretty casually strolling along, until I looked out at the massive
herd of toddlers rapidly dispersing out over the countryside and realized, holy crap, we better put a
move on it! Of course I also had a wicked case of laryngitis, which had left me voiceless that
morning, so I looked at Preston, and in the loudest voice-crackling whisper I could muster, yelled,
"Hey buddy, we gotta GO!" With a look of half-terror/half-bewilderment, Preston started running beside
me and we took off toward the farthest baseball field and began aimlessly scouring for eggs. As I
looked around, I started to become quite concerned that we weren't going to find a single egg, and I
thought, I'll be pissed if we came all this way and my child doesn't get to find one gosh darn Easter
egg! I did have to restrain myself on several occasions, from tackling a few random unsupervised
egg-hungry kindergartners, but we did finally make our way to unchartered territory and were able to
locate several eggs. It did still require a bit of shoo-ing away of some older kids, but by that time my
claws were out. In the end, Preston walked away with 5 eggs (the max allowed), and I was a happy,
and relieved, mama. To top it off, Preston made his first appearance in the Syracuse news, in the
video below. The quaintly upbeat background music is pretty misleading in terms of the actual intensity
of the hunt, (it should have been set to the Indiana Jones theme song or something) and overall the
video is quite anti-climactic, but Preston has a pretty generous cameo at about 0:38.
