A. His father is deathly allergic.
B. His dog would probably eat it. (Bailey is what we call "not cat-friendly." If she were back at the SPCA, she would have the big sign over her kennel indicating "no cats" and "no kids.")
I suppose this is mostly in favor of the cat population, as I'm sure, in general, they prefer not to be poked and prodded by toddlers (and stalked by Dingo-esque canines). Preston does enjoy quite a bit of Facetiming with Aunt Sarah & Uncle Mike's cat Precious, and Grandma & Grandpa E's cat Gracie. He occasionally gets to see Gracie in real life, but as Gracie has quickly grown out of her kitty phase, and Preston has progressed quickly into a bull-in-a-china-shop/squeeling toddler, their last meeting resulted in a fair amount of hissing on Gracie's part. So perhaps it is best for all if Preston doesn't have his own cat for a few years...
Luckily, Aunt Sarah came through with the next best thing: a fake cat. And wow, does Preston love it. He even insisted on taking it to daycare Friday. They must have made him put it away, because the first thing he did when he saw me grab his tote bag was come running. Not to say hello to me, but to retrieve his cat from the bag. He proceeded to give it big snuggles, kept saying "meow," and didn't let go until we got home. Here is the snapshot I managed with my cell phone:
He also routinely shares his bottle of milk with the cat, occasionally offers it juice, and when teethbrushing time comes around, he will graciously stick the toothbrush in its face (which I'm quite sure is mostly a tactic to avoid brushing his own teeth).
I also found this on my phone while uploading:
